Rats, Humans Offer Danger to Nesting Birds - Enriqueta Velarde

Around the world, there are many barren rocks that sit in the middle of the ocean that function as breeding places for the thousands of sea birds that live in the area. But none of these small islands have had such a hold on biologist Enriqueta Velarde who has migrated to the same island in Mexico’s Gulf of California every year for the past 35, to study and help conserve the birds that nest there. For her dedication and perseverance, Velarde has been awarded the 2014 National Geographic/Buffett Award for Leadership in Conservation.
