Kayaking the Longest Rivers on Each Continent - Mark Kalch
Reaching the tallest point on every continent, a feat known as “The Seven Summits” is a mountain climbing achievement that few people accomplish. But fewer still people even attempt the continental collection that Mark Kalch is currently pursuing. He has paddled down the longest river in South America, North America, and Europe. Of those three continents, he points to the Amazon River as the most difficult. He spent 153 days descending that river, braving Class V and VI rapids. “There were moments when we wondered if this was the end of us, not just the expedition,” he tells Boyd. “It started to wear thin after a few months, but very enjoyable at the same time.” Kalch says he’s looking forward to paddling Antarctica’s 25-mile Onyx, which will take less than a day, but will be “logistically challenging.”
